The Joint Venture of consulting firms TPA (Thymio Papayannis and Associates Inc.) and DAO (Dal Al Omran) have been commissioned -after an international call for tenders- by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to provide full design services for the development of a large metropolitan park (with a surface of 505.000 m²) in the mid-southern part of the city. TPA holds the role of masterplanner and landscaper acting as leader of a joint venture with Dar al Omran Architects, Planners, Engineers that is providing architectural and engineering services for the buildings and the utilities.
King Abdullah II Park, which will form part of a triangle of metropolitan parks, is one of the key projects of the city of Amman expected to act as a catalyst for the urbanization of the newly incorporated southern parts of the city. The proposed design approach places the emphasis on the urban and social aspects, on the integration of the Park in the developing urban context of the city of Amman, on the treatment of landscape as the element which will give to the park its special sense of place and identity, conceived as a combination of ‘nature with urbanity’. The key gesture that defines spatial organization revolves around the manipulation and intensification of the existing relief to create a system of naturally -organic formed zones that form the basis for the organization of movements and separation of the ‘inside’ from the ‘outside’. In parallel, a combination of geometric and natural landscape design is used to articulate the borders and satisfy continuity and penetration of the park into the city fabric. Activities are organized in selected poles that serve different functions with regard to the double identity of the park, as a metropolitan pole of attraction and a meeting point of the local population. The initial scope of work was modified along the course of the study to incorporate a large war-museum in the south-western edge of the site. The park is under construction.
