The competition was organized in the framework of the programme of works of the "Thessaloniki 1997" Organisation on the occasion of declaring the city as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1997.
It concerns the utilisation of the coastal zone, of 7 km length, characterised by the lack of activities and where the presence of expressways has cut off the sea from the daily life of the inhabitants.
The proposal submitted by the firm aimed at meeting the following objectives:
the detection and choice of site for viable activities missing from the city that could be developed along the seafront;
the restoration of the communication of the inhabitants with the sea;
the appropriate formation of the seafront and free spaces for the reception of the new activities and their integration in the life of the city.
The proposal concludes in a programme of interventions that can be implemented, and are prioritized based on the criterion of the criticality of the problems and needs as well as the expected caliber of the favourable city-planning impacts.
