The project is being executed within the framework of the ENVIREG Programme for the protection of coastal areas in Greece.
The objectives of the Programme can be summed up as follows:
Reduction of coastal pollution (defining coastal areas as those within 10 km. from the sea) so as to improve and develop them in qualitative and quantitative socio-economic terms.
The spatial planning regulation of coastal areas and islands so as to prevent damage by excessive concentration of tourism and pressure for development together with the proposing of measures to preserve the natural beauty and habitats of the country.
Promotion of environmental agriculture in the coastal zone.
The design project had two objectives:
To formulate a cohesive framework for spatial organisation, with specific statutory land use measures by type of area, so as to preserve the character of the Gulf of Corinth as an eco-system of great sensitivity.
To produce specific Action Plans for each sector containing the steps to be taken (including priorities, funding, etc.) in order to improve the quality of the eco-system.
