AMVRAKIKOS GULF, GREECE (1994)
AMVRAKIKOS GULF RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
CLIENT: MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT, SPATIAL PLANNING AND PUBLIC WORKS, COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES

This study contributes to the formulation of realistic proposals in the environmental sector in the direction of recommending the specific measures which ought to be taken in order to provide effective protection for the Amvrakikos Gulf eco-system, with an emphasis on the most ecologically sensitive aspects of the problems.
The proposals take into consideration social needs and the requirements related to development of the area. It is proposed that exploitation of the area's natural resources will only take place on condition that the ecological and structural components of the system are not affected.
The central criterion in documenting the development and protection options is the search for the potential of long-term development of the natural resources rather than short-term over-exploitation which destroys the environment.
Following the completion of Phase A , Phase B consisting of a more specific approach to the issues, that commissioned from the same team as:

  • Study of zoning/delineation of the areas scheduled for protection under EU Directive 409/79.
  • A summary technical and economic study on the processing of liquid waste  from pig farms.
  • The recommendation and description of a system for the long-term monitoring of the environmental quality of the Amvrakikos Gulf.
  • Assessment of the environmental impact of the projects provided for in the Amvrakikos Programme Contract.
  • A study of the flora and fauna.
