COMPLETION AND MODERNISATION OF THE CONSERVATORY OF ATHENS BUILDING (2016)
The completion and renovation of the Conservatory of Athens, in the heart of the city, an important cultural project, a boost for the performing arts.

Employer: ATHENS CONSERVATOIRE

The Conservatory of Athens is the oldest musical educational institution of modern Greece. It is distinguished for the quality, the scope of its work and for its contribution to the musical culture of the country. Nowadays it is housed in an iconic but unfinished building in the center of Athens, next to Aristotele’s Lyceum. The building has been designed in the 1960s by the renowned Greek architect Ioannis Despotopoulos. With its Bauhaus influences, the building constitutes an important example of modern Greek architecture.

Aiming to a creative continuity of its operation, through a good use of its reputation, history, building infrastructure and human resources, the Athens Conservatory launched, since April of 2013, a series of actions and detailed studies (Feasibility Study and Detailed Architectural Studies). Their purpose was to attract resources ensuring its viability as a self-financing organization. Certain studies –already conducted and coordinated by TPA- have been funded thanks to the generous support of donors such as the Association "Friends of Music" and the Schwarz Foundation in Berlin, Bodossaki and Leventis Foundations as well as Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

It should be noted that the completion and modernization of the building’s infrastructure and the efficient use of its unique advantages are the decisive factor for the development of synergies and activities by which the Athens Conservatory:
a. will cover essential needs in the field of education and creativity, in all sectors of the performing arts, such as music, dance and drama,
b. will integrate innovative technologies that contribute to the enlargement of music culture in our country,
c. will be upgraded into a Higher Education School for Performing Arts,
d. will exploit the location, the architectural quality and the potential of the building to gather additional functions in the fields of culture, education and tourism, which will operate reciprocally and interactively with the above uses, thus making this important facility a modern center of artistic education and cultural activity.
