The University of Ioannina, aiming at housing its extensive collection of book volumes in a single library building, announced a competition by the method "Design - Construction".
The new library building that will house approximately 1.000.000 books and journals, will be constructed on a total area of 1.7 ha within the University Campus.
The modern building complex for the architectural, structural, and electrical and mechanical studies. It then proceeded to the completion of the totality of the designs at the level of application studies, on behalf of the building contractor. It submitted complete architectural, structural and electrical and mechanical studies, that were based on the following design principles:
Creation of a modern University Library which will cover the whole spectrum of the University's educational and research work and also will meet the continuously evolving requirements for organisation, cataloguing, updating and support of its varied material.
Readability and clear distinction between the individual functions housed in the building, possibly not exclusively related to the functions of the Library.
Creation of discernible zones, so as to express and delineate clearly the various functional units.
Easy access to all levels of the building by disabled people.
Bio-climatic approach of the shell, so that the building combines energy efficiency and sunlight protection, and is situated in such a way that it best integrates with the landscape.
