The broader area of Piraeus and in particular the sector to the west of the central port was, during the 19th century and for many decades in the 20th, the capital's heavy industrial plants. Therefore It was developed services for shipbuilding and ships' repair as well as general port installations. In addition to these activities of the central sewerage processing plant for the whole of the Athenian basin aggravated even more the environmental conditions of the area.
It is obvious that the physical and organisational infrastructure of Piraeus should be radically improved if it were to develop into a peripheral maritime and multifunctional centre. To this effect a strategically planned large scale urban development would signal the dawn of a new urban reality.
The coastal area of Drapetsona - Keratsini, due to its large size, the critical mass required to elevate this project into an urban intervention of strategic importance with beneficial long term effects on the economy, employment opportunities and the environmental conditions at local, but also at regional and national level with possible positive repercussions on the Greek capital’s rating in the international hierarchy of metropolitan areas.
