Faleron Bay is the natural front of the Athenian conurbation to the sea. In recent years an ambitious regeneration program has been implemented with the aim of restoring the relationship between the city and the sea and turning the area into a metropolitan pole of recreation, sports and cultural activities. Part of this wide redevelopment program of that involved complex infrastructure works and construction of building facilities was completed over the period of the Olympic Games to host the sports of Beach Volley, Handball and Tae Kwon Do. TPA was responsible for the overall Master Plan and full architectural studies.
The present effort involves urban design development and concept landscape design for the remaining part of the coastal area that is reserved for ecological and mild sports and recreation activities open to general public use.
The site with a total surface of 26 ha has an important ecological importance as it is situated between the estuaries of two rivers (Ilissos and Kifissos) that used to form a bird’s sanctuary and are now artificially constructed. Therefore a prime goal of the design approach has been to restore partly these ecological functions and reconciliate the presence of both natural and human functions on the site.
Besides the ecological park the site contains also a complex of swimming pools naturally integrated into a pine forest, where pick nick facilities are provided, open air sports facilities (multi purpose racetrack, basket ball and 5x5 football courts), cafes and parking. Special attention has been given to the investigation of alternative scenarios of water management and irrigation through water harvesting, use of treated water and also desalination units.
Only Phase I of the project was completed.
